Psalm 91
Daily Devotional From Psalm 91–
Verse 14
“‘Because he loves me,’ says the Lord, ‘I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.’”
What’s curious about Psalm 91 is that even Satan seemed to think that it is talking about Christ (Luke 4:10). Yet Jesus replies to Satan’s temptations with, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test,” which is from Deuteronomy 6:16. The offer was this: save yourself from harm by commanding the angels to rescue you. Jesus’ response is telling. In refusing to test God, Jesus fulfills this psalm. Jesus acknowledges YHWH’s name; He honors it by not using God for selfish gain. In doing so, it is as the Psalm responds, “Because He loves Me … I will rescue Him.”
There may be times when we are tempted to seek rescue on our own. It may even appear that it is within our means and authority to do so. And there may be times when this is the case. However, there will also be times when we must follow in the example of Christ, trusting that because we love Him, we will be rescued. That because we do not abuse His name, we will be delivered.
