1 Chronicles 27
Daily devotional from 1 Chronicles 27--
Verse 23-24
“When David took his census, he did not count those who were younger than twenty years of age, because the LORD had promised to make the Israelites as numerous as the stars in heaven. Joab son of Zeruiah began the census but never finished it because the anger of God fell on Israel. The total number was never recorded in King David’s official records” (NLT).
Why would God get angry about Joab counting people under twenty in Israel? When we read closely, we can see that it has to do with God’s promise to Abraham back in Genesis 15. In today’s chapter, God wanted Israel to remember this promise! David remembered, and he didn’t even bother counting the youngest generations because he trusted that God would follow through. Joab lost sight of the promise, and decided to count them anyway. The result of his choice was the wrath of God falling upon Israel. To me, this seems to be a matter of faith.
If God has ever promised you something, you probably know how hard it can be to trust that he will follow through, especially when you don’t see the fulfillment in front of you. However, God never forgets his promises. Today, consider: do you have faith that God will fulfill his promises to you?
