2 Kings 18
Daily Devotional from 2 Kings 18--
Verses 3-4
And [Hezekiah] did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that David his father had done. He removed the high places and broke the pillars and cut down the Asherah. And he broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the people of Israel had made offerings to it (it was called Nehushtan).
Idolatry has no place where the Lord resides. By removing the idols — even the one erected at the command of the Lord— we please the heart of God and do what’s right.
In Numbers 21, the Lord commanded Moses to erect a bronze snake, that by looking upon it, healing came on those who were bitten by snakes. This item that was used by God to bring healing became an idol in the hearts of Israel, and it had to be destroyed.
If we are not careful, we can make things that were once gifts from the Lord an idol in our hearts. Is there anything in our lives that needs to be smashed, cut down, or thrown out? What do we give our hearts to? What are we discipled by? Our TV? The News? Social Media? Our algorithms? Our political beliefs? What is God asking you to tear down?
Tear it down. Turn it off. Throw it away. Don’t let it disciple you into hell.
