1 Chronicles 2
Daily Devotional from 1 Chronicles 2--
Verse 3
The sons of Judah: Er, Onan and Shelah…Now Er, Judah's firstborn, was evil in the sight of the Lord, and He put him to death.”
This account may give us pause. How do we understand this? How do we reconcile God’s justice with His mercy? One pastor whose comments I read said we don’t:
“…because they are not enemies, they are friends who are not in conflict but in perfect divine harmony. Even though in our minds what is good and just may have some tension, in God’s mind these two are in perfect harmony. We can be confident that God will always do what is right; and what is right is also always good. Therefore, we read and apply the Bible with humility, prayerfulness, and trust.” (Erik Raymond, Redeemer Fellowship Church, Boston, MA, The Gospel Coalition [TCG]).
Lord, if we at times struggle to understand scriptural events, help us to remember that you always do what is right and you are always good. We trust you completely. Amen.
