2 Kings 25

Daily devotional from 2 Kings 25--

Verse 27
Evil-marodach…graciously freed Jehoiachin king of Judah from prison.

In the midst of this account of an awful time in Judah, King Jehoiachin’s release from prison seems like a little ray of light. It’s interesting, we read in the previous chapter that Jehoiachin wasn’t any better than the other kings–he did evil in the sight of the Lord. So where did he get a get-out-of-jail-free card? The text doesn’t share that information with us, but it does give us a really stark picture of someone receiving unmerited grace.

It reminds me of the grace that Jesus so freely gives us. We might not like to admit it, but we’re just like the kings of Israel and Judah in that we’ve all done evil in the sight of the Lord. None of us deserve mercy or freedom. But God, in his deep love, gives us both of those things. Let’s be grateful today for the grace we have received!
