2 Chronicles 12
Daily devotional from 2 Chronicles 12--
Verse 7
“When the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah: ‘They have humbled themselves. I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance, and my wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.’”
In Hebrew, the word for humbled is niphal. Its meaning in this passage is, “to submit oneself, to behave oneself submissively, especially before God or a divine messenger.”¹ To submit is to yield to the authority or will of another.² In this case, the authority and will of God.
Rehoboam made a pretty big mistake in the beginning of this chapter: he abandoned the law of God. However, after hearing from the prophet Shemaiah, he yielded himself to the will of God, and God withdrew his wrath from Jerusalem. We are blessed with the ability to do the same when we make a mistake; we can bend our knee, admit our need and dependence on God, and humble ourselves before him. Is there a sin in your life that you have not repented of? A mistake you have yet to make right? Take some time today to humble yourself before God and submit to his authority and will.

2. Merriam-Webster, “submit.”
