Verse 33
Ner was the father of Kish, Kish of Saul, Saul of Jonathan…


There’s a lot of pressure these days to erase (or at least heavily censure) historical figures we consider problematic. However, we don’t see that in the genealogies. Chronicles was written centuries after Saul, and the House of Saul was, in many ways, a blemish on Israel’s story. And while the Chronicler doesn’t glorify Saul, neither does he condemn him.


I think we can take our cues from a method like that. As a nation, we have our dubious characters and shameful chapters, but that doesn’t mean they deserve to be scrubbed from our national memory. Remembrance is not endorsement. And one day the roles will change, and quite likely we ourselves will need the forbearance of future generations.


Therefore, let’s be kind to our ancestors, remembering that we, too, will stand before the judgment of posterity.
