2 Kings 1
Daily Devotional from 2 Kings 1–
Verse 14
‘Behold, fire came down from heaven and consumed the two former captains of fifty men with their fifties, but now let my life be precious in your sight.’
Elijah was an ordinary man. He had faults and fears just like you and I do. And yet, he could call down fire from Heaven and God would respond with fire. What kind of relationship did he and God have? The same kind of relationship God offers us through the blood sacrifice of His One and Only Son, Jesus Christ.
Does that mean we will call down fire from Heaven and God will answer? Not necessarily. But it does mean that He will be with us and respond in every encounter we have with Him.
Now let’s look at the third Captain. He didn’t make any demands of Elijah. He approached humbly and pleaded for his life. Elijah responded like God responds to us, with mercy. So let’s come to God, humbly and with pure honesty, expressing our fears and desires and
letting Him fill us with everything we truly need. As James reminds us, draw near to God and He will draw near to you. And who knows what surprises He has in store for us as we seek Him.
