Verses 7-8
When Phinehas…saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped.


This story might seem overly severe. However, the Israelites were dying of a plague sent by God because the Midianite and Moabite women were luring them into worshipping Baal, which included both animal sacrifice and ritual prostitution. Some translations of the Bible liken “the chamber” noted above to a brothel tent. So there was some serious bad stuff going on in the camp here, worthy of retribution!


Phinehas was disgusted by the sin he saw, so he did something about it. Are we as disgusted by our own sin? All sin separates us from God – whether it’s lust, lies or jealous eyes. Will you be as zealous as Phinehas about your own holiness today? Ask the Holy Spirit to show you if there’s anything you need to cut out of your life, and then look to Jesus to help you walk in purity.
