Psalm 56

Daily Devotional from Psalm 56–

Verses 12b-13
“I will render thank offerings to you. For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.”

There are so many verses I could have highlighted in this chapter! But I find 12 and 13 to be the most profound in light of David’s situation. He writes this song about trusting God after he was seized by the Philistines. He sings to the Lord, asking for his grace and deliverance, but he doesn’t stop there. The majority of the rest of this psalm is about how God sees him and is trustworthy in every situation. David sings of God catching each tear in a bottle. He writes, “This I know, that God is for me,” and “What can man do to me?” In verses 12 and 13, David declares his thanks to the Lord, not because God saved his physical body from the Philistines, but because God saved his soul from death.

It’s easy to be more concerned about our physical state. But as David declares in his song, the best thing God has done for us isn’t physical. He saved our souls, and that matters most.
