Psalm 22
Daily Devotional from Psalm 22–
Verses 1
“My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning.”
In the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, Jesus cried out from the cross: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” He knew that those present would recognize the words he spoke. Jesus was quoting King David, who wrote these words roughly a thousand years earlier from a pit of despair, feeling that God was far off. In his anguish, the King cried his complaint for two full verses; then he worshiped. He wrote, “Yet You are holy…” and he spent the rest of the psalm, with tears falling on his parchment, thanking God for His blessing, asking God for provision, and praising God’s righteousness.
I have never felt the stress of kingship over a rebellious nation, nor the agony of crucifixion. But you know? I’ve endured hardship… pain… fear. And I’m human, so I know it will happen again. I would never compare myself to either of these two giants, but I thank them both for providing me instructions for how to navigate the dark times.
Dear Lord God, how wonderful it is that I can rest in your love and in your plan for my life when my days turn dark, and I can’t hear you. Help me to keep you in mind. Thank you for your might. Thank you for loving me.
