2 Samuel 20

Daily Devotional from 2 Samuel 20–

Verses 16 & 19
16 Then a wise woman called from the city, “Listen!…
19 I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up the heritage of the Lord?”

This was a bold and courageous move on her part. As a self-described peaceable and faithful woman, she pointed out the former role of Abel as a place to seek counsel and settle matters. She challenged Joab about destroying the city considered “a mother in Israel” that held “the heritage of the Lord”. She was wise to speak out and Joab was wise to listen. Destruction of the whole city was averted, sparing many lives.

When we see situations in which we might intervene to “settle a matter,” may we too be bold and courageous. We can ask the Lord to tell us what to do and to give us wisdom as to what to say and to whom.

Matthew 5:9 states, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God".
