2 Samuel 4
Daily Devotional from 2 Samuel 4—
Verse 8
…and brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron. And they said to the king, "Here is the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought
your life. The Lord has avenged my lord the king this day on Saul and on his offspring."
Just like the young Amalekite who brought David news of Saul’s death, Rechab and Baanah thought they were bringing good news of Ish-bosheth’s death to David. How wrong they were. I can only imagine how surprised they were at David’s reaction. They had killed a fellow Benjamite in his own bed and thought they were doing David a favor. Baanah was a leader of a raiding band under the direction of Ish-bosheth. Rechab, his brother, was a leader among Saul’s men. And yet they killed Saul’s son, the very leader they had pledged to follow. Consequently, they incurred David’s anger and they were put to death for their betrayal and murder.
Anytime we choose to disregard God’s laws thinking we are doing something good, let’s remember that God leaves no doubt that obedience to His Word is always the best choice.
