Deuteronomy 26

Daily Devotional from Deuteronomy 26–

Verses 12-13b
When you have finished paying all the tithe of your produce in the third year, which is the year of tithing, giving it to the Levite, the immigrant, the orphan, and the widow, so that they may eat within your towns and be filled, then you will say before the LORD your God…. ‘I have not transgressed any of your commandments, nor have I forgotten them.’

Throughout the law, God makes provisions for those who aren’t in a position to be able to care for themselves. He makes sure they are fed and are allotted a portion of the tithe. The heart of the law is to (as Jesus says) love God and love others…not doing so being a transgression (knowing the law and disobeying it anyway).

Are there people in our lives (or communities) who need the Church to love them well? How can we love our widows (or our elderly) better? How can we love kids in foster care better? How can we love modern immigrants in a way that reflects the heart of God in a more robust way?

God sees them and cares for them, and our response to their needs reflects who we serve.
