Deuteronomy 21
Daily Devotional from Deuteronomy 21–
Verse 23b
…for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.
This Old Testament law guides the care for a person who was hanged. It shows that the body must be treated with dignity, and the gravity of the situation in which the whole land can become defiled through the mishandling of such a one. This is why the followers of Jesus took down his body, and he was buried as soon as possible (in adherence to the law).
In the New Testament, we see that the curse we deserved for our sin was placed on Jesus. It made possible our salvation, restoration to God, and receiving of the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 3:13-14
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us–for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree” – so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
