Deuteronomy 9

Daily Devotional from Deuteronomy 9–

Verse 6
Understand that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.

The Israelites were tempted to believe that they earned the Promised Land. But they didn’t. They inherited the land because God is faithful to keep his promises.

Our constant temptation is to believe that we earn what we have, especially the favor of the Lord. It is all too easy to feel like God owes us because we go to church, we obey his commands, we have the right theological framework, we vote the right way, etc.

The blessings we have are not owed to us. They are gifts from God because HE is good and faithful to keep his promises. And we are blessed because HE is good in spite of our pride.

Pride is a sneaky thing, and it is best to root out now before it gets too much. Is there something you feel like God “owes” you that you may need to give up? Root it out now before it begins to rot.
