Leviticus 20
Daily Devotional from Leviticus 20—
Verse 23 & 26
You must not follow the statutes of the nations I am driving out before you, for they did all these things, and I abhorred them… You are to be holy to me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be mine.
The nations that filled the ancient land of Canaan participated in worship practices that were chilling. To appease their gods, they participated in child sacrifice (Molech) and used their bodies in ways that the gods deemed pleasurable. They sought out psychics and mediums—hoping that the witchcraft will give them insight into their futures. They were detestable to the LORD because these things devalued human life, making other people an object to be used to gain favor with the gods.
The gods of our world may look a little different, but they have the same demands. Money, power, fame, sex, material possessions/wealth, SELF… As Christians we are set apart. We are to view children, sex, money (our resources), ourselves, and even the spiritual realm in a different way than the world. God is not here to spoil our fun but to offer us a life actually worth living that will bring value to other people and peace and joy to the community…not just ourselves.
