2 Samuel 12-14

Daily Devotional from 2 Samuel 12—

Verses 13-14
David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord has also put away your sin; you shall not die. Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child who is born to you shall die.”

The “deed” Nathan refers to is actually several:
Lust
Adultery
Cover-Up
Murder

David committed these sins against his fellow man. But there’s more: David “utterly scorned the Lord” by his actions. To scorn is to view someone as worthless or despicable. WOW. For the man who loved God with all his heart, the sweet psalmist of Israel, to be accused of despising God! What a low point in David’s life.

Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands.” When we disobey Him, our actions show that we despise Him. And yet, we cannot keep all his commands. We’re too bent toward our own will. [Enter Grace.] Just as David didn’t have to die for his sin, neither do we. But someone had to die. In David’s case, the child. In our case, Jesus. Thank Him for not only taking your punishment but forgiving the times you scorned his will in favor of going your own way. He’s so gracious!
