Romans 14
Romans 14:3
Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgement on the one who eats.
Should Christians read Harry Potter? Should they listen to secular music? Should they watch movies that condone cursing and violence? Is it advisable to smoke or drink? Should they get tattoos? Do yoga? Recognize Halloween? Should they invest time in video games? Is it ethical to eat farmed meat? Vaccinate children? These are all questions we need to sort through. And when we arrive at different conclusions, here is the optimal question—what will be our attitude toward each other? Hopefully, as we see here in Romans 14, it’s gracious and considerate.
Each Christian must listen to his or her own conscience, context, and calling in order to answer these questions well. Those who give themselves license ought not to despise those who abstain. And those who abstain should not pass judgement on those who indulge. Each of us must do what’s right for us, while never losing sight of what’s best for the community. And this requires a high level of grace and consideration.
