Luke 14:34-35
Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
 
There were times when Jesus didn’t mince his words, and we would do ourselves a great disservice if we danced around his difficult sayings. Given the context here, we see this is a warning to would-be disciples. Don’t hastily throw your lot in with Jesus without considering the cost. If you do, you run the risk of losing your flavor. Salt has a distinctive taste, it enlivens, it preserves, it heals, and your witness of Jesus does as well. But it comes at a cost, and it might even be your life. But, come hell or high water, keep yourself in the love of God, and you will never turn bland and your faith will never grow tame. You will be the salt of the earth.
