Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us?
Sometimes churches can get a little tribal.
We develop strong group loyalty, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But as we see in verse 38, and following, Jesus transcends any one group. He is bigger than our sects and creeds. He is larger than our revivals and movements. He is not the sole possession of any one group, no matter how used of God they may be. Jesus belongs to all the churches that seek to honor his Word and work. They may look and act different, they may stress different things, but if they invoke the name of Jesus, who are we to think they don’t belong on the team?
