2 Samuel 19
Daily Devotional from 2 Samuel 19–
Verse 3
And the people stole into the city that day as people steal in who are ashamed when they flee in battle.
David was so deeply mourning the loss of Absalom that he didn’t want to go back to his kingly responsibilities. With no king in Jerusalem, the people are unsettled, feeling the chaos of the internal war. David’s reaction to the victory left them feeling lost, like sheep without a shepherd. Joab finally convinces David to act like the King he is. My heart hurts for David. There is no time to grieve. I’m sure it wasn’t easy. But David did what he needed to do for the people.
Like David’s army, our hearts get wounded and lost when the King of Kings isn’t sitting as Lord of our hearts. Today I am thankful that Jesus, our King, always comes to rule and reign over our lives and hearts. He brings beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and a garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Won’t you accept this Lordship today? There is no safer place than having King Jesus sitting on the throne of our hearts.
