Daily Devotional from Job 2--

Verse 13
“And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great.”

Sometimes, when a loved one is hurting, this is all they need. They don’t need opinions, advice, rebuke, an assessment of the situation, or sayings that seem right but come across as trite in the moment. There are times when they might need advice or coaching, but I think if Job’s friends had stopped right here, sat with him in silence and grief for seven days, then hugged him and went home, everyone might have been better off.

If God brings you along someone’s side when they are suffering, be sure to lean on the Holy Spirit for how best to help. Sometimes it’s just sitting and crying or praying with them.
