2 Samuel 16

Daily Devotional from 2 Samuel 16—

Verse 11
...Leave him alone, and let him curse, for the Lord has told him to.

What an interesting chapter. One of the things that strikes me in this passage is David’s humility before God as Shimei curses him, throws rocks at him, and flings dust at him. I don’t know about you, but I think I would get a little irritated at some point if that was happening to me, even to the point of retaliating. That seems like a reasonable response… right? But David has deep humility in his heart, and instead of getting angry or put-off, he takes the insults in stride and gives the situation to God.

I could learn a thing or two from David’s response. My natural response–and maybe yours, too–would be to fight for control over the situation and try to make Shimei stop, or at least let him know that he’s wrong. But I sense God inviting us into the same place David was in: a place of deep submission. Can we release control to our Father? Can we give him the reins? Can we fully trust God in the midst of our pain? This is his gracious invitation to us today!
