Verses 4-5a, 10a
The people of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, received their inheritance. The territory of the people of Ephraim by their clans…However, they did not drive out the Canaanites…
The specificity of the boundaries God described shows his wisdom to avert future disputes. I once heard of a study that was done with school children. On the playgrounds without fences, the children stayed toward the middle, less active. On the ones with fences, they ran free, playing to the edges. Limits can provide a sense of protection and freedom to fully enjoy the surroundings.
Since they did not fully drive out the Canaanites, Israel’s obedience was only partial, resulting in future challenges.
We have an inheritance in Christ. Our God is faithful to his promises. He provides guidelines for safety and freedom. We must seek to know his will and check ourselves as to whether we are obeying God fully. In his grace, he will draw us near, speak to us and empower us to follow his ways. Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom!
