Verse 23
No Ammonite or Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord. Even to the tenth generation…
God was saying these people were trouble, so don’t make alliances with them. They snubbed you, they cursed you, and, in Numbers 25, they seduced you. And since they cursed you, they brought a curse upon themselves - down to the 10th generation!
Generational curses can be a real thing. Sin travels in families! But just because you belong to a family, doesn’t mean that family needs to define you. You can set into motion a new system. That’s what Ruth did! (If you’re not familiar, please read her story!) She broke the pattern. She changed the narrative.
Sometimes God needs to denounce groups of people. Sometimes he speaks in categorical terms, but don’t think for a moment he’s not willing to deal with you as an individual. The beautiful thing about the gospel is that you can be the descendant of sin, and yet, like Ruth, the mother of redemption. Just because you have an outsider family doesn’t need to keep you on the outside.
