Deuteronomy 22
Daily Devotional from Deuteronomy 22—
Verse 1
You shall not see your brother's ox or his sheep going astray and ignore them. You shall take them back to your brother.
God wanted his people to live in harmony and part of that happens when we look out for each other. He was teaching his children how to be ‘others-focused’ and how to treat each other how they’d want to be treated. You see a brother in need; you help him out.
Jesus took it two steps further: He tells us in Matthew 5 that if someone takes our shirt we should give it, and give our coat as well. If someone forces us to go one mile, we should go two. That’s one step, but Jesus isn’t just referring to going the extra mile for our brothers and sisters, but also for our enemies. For those we love and those who don't love us, the love of God compels us to meet them where they are, and then go above and beyond because that’s the kind of love Jesus lavishes on us!
