Leviticus 27
Daily Devotional from Leviticus 27—
Verse 21
But the field, when it is released in the jubilee, shall be a holy gift to the Lord, like a field that has been devoted. The priest shall be in possession of it.
Have you ever hit the reset button on something that wasn’t functioning properly? When the Israelites reached the Promised Land, God distributed land to the tribes. Over the years, as people needed money, they might have sold their land or even become indentured servants.
Every 50th year, in the Year of Jubilee, land was to be returned to its original owners. The land was to be left fallow - no sowing or reaping, just living off what it produced in previous years. Indentured servants were released and returned to their families. It was a time of rest and dependence on God, release, restoration, and celebration. It was God’s reset button.
Jesus, announcing His ministry in the synagogue, proclaimed a jubilee year (Luke 4:9). This is what His ministry (his life, death, and resurrection) accomplished. It brought good news - release from captivity, restoration, dependence on God, and celebration.
What wonderful benefits we have as Christians!
