Leviticus 14
Daily Devotional from Leviticus 14 (selections)—
…and the priest shall go out of the camp… the priest shall put [the blood] on the lobe of the right ear of him who is to be cleansed and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot …the priest shall put [the oil] on the lobe…the thumb…the big toe…on top of the blood...
The priest’s treatment of leprosy begins not by the leper coming to the priest, but the priest going out to him. This is a picture of what Jesus did for us. His shed blood on the cross is the perfect cleansing sacrifice for our sin guilt which like leprosy, defiles us and would ultimately lead to our death. Jesus, our High Priest, comes to us, applies his blood and the oil of His Holy Spirit to purify, redeem and empower us. By His act of love, we are brought near to the Father and made heirs with Jesus to the kingdom of God. We are welcomed into the family of God.
Why on the ear lobe, thumb and big toe? Charles Spurgeon says, “That oil is put on his ear, so that his ear hears his Master’s voice, and listens to the Word of God. That oil is put upon his hand that he may be a consecrated man to serve his God. That oil is put upon his foot that his feet may run in the way of God’s commands, even to the end.”
What wondrous love is this!
