2 Kings 12
Daily Devotional from 2 Kings 13–
Verses 18-19
And he said, “Take the arrows,” and he took them. And he
said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground with them.” And
he struck three times and stopped. Then the man of God
was angry with him and said, “You should have struck five
or six times; then you would have struck down Syria until
you had made an end of it, but now you will strike down
Syria only three times.”
Elisha was about to die, but he instructed Joash (Jehoash), the king of Israel, to strike the ground with arrows. When
Joash only struck the ground three times, Elisha got angry
and reproved him.
If Joash had only struck the ground five to six times, Syria
would have been completely vanquished. Instead, Israel
would win only three battles.
The lesson for us in these verses is to never give up. When
our spiritual enemy attacks and we fight back with prayer,
we should keep praying. Don’t stop at three. It may be the
next one that wins the war!
