Genesis 49-50
Daily Devotional from Genesis 49--
Verse 33
When Jacob finished commanding his sons, he drew up his feet into the bed and breathed his last and was gathered to his people.
Jacob’s life on earth came to an end just as all of ours will. But I find it interesting that it says “and was gathered to his people.” He was gathered to be buried with his ancestors but much time passed between his death and burial. In this context, it seems simultaneously in the moment he died he was brought together with his people, the ones who had already died. What a great hope we have knowing that one day we too will be gathered together to our people who have already moved on from earth to heaven. We are together now as the church but praise God for when we get to be together in heaven. Our God is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob the God of the living not of the dead.
