Psalm 20

Daily Devotional from Psalm 20–

Verse 7
“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”

During this time, chariots and horses were signs of military strength and financial prosperity. The world would like us to believe that we are successful (as a nation or individually) if we have a strong military or abundant resources. Yet, as we see so often in scripture, that no military can hold strong against the LORD. This verse can easily send our minds back to the Exodus, where Pharaoh and his army of chariots and horses chased after the Hebrew People— only to perish in the Red Sea as God removed his hand from the waters.

The name of the LORD— Yahweh— is what we trust in. It is his name that we walk under (that banner in verse 5) , signifying that we are his and he is ours, and that his name can carry us through every battle. We trust in his name because he is faithful to his word and has said that we are more than conquerors in Christ (Romans 8:37-38), because Jesus has already won. As those who follow Jesus, we trust in his name and believe in his victory and carry that trust into every battle we face. This is what it means to “bear the name of the Lord!” And we never want to bear his name in vain.
