1 Chronicles 24

Daily Devotional from 1 Chronicles 24–

Verse 5
“They divided them by lot, all alike, for there were sacred
officers and officers of God among both the sons of Eleazar
and the sons of Ithamar.”

By David’s time, the number of priests had grown
exceptionally large. To maintain order and fairness in
temple service, David set up rotating divisions of priests. In
the selection process, he used lots to aid his decisions. Lots were also used to choose Judas’s replacement in the New Testament. (Acts 1:26)

This practice was not a game of chance, but was prayerfully used with the belief that God controlled the lots: “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.”

Why don’t we use lots today?

After Pentecost, this practice disappeared, replaced with
guidance from the Holy Spirit. When seeking direction in
your life, do not depend on horoscopes, or fortune-tellers,
but seek direction from the Holy Spirit, who indwells all
believers. (1 Cor 3:16)
