Daily Devotional from 1 Chronicles 13--
Verses 1, 7, & 10
David consulted with …every leader… And they carried the ark of God on a new cart…Uzzah put out his hand to take hold of the ark… And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and He struck him down because he put out his hand to the ark, and he died there before God.
David wanted to bring back the ark, but what went wrong? First, he consulted with men and not with God through the priests. Second, he allowed the ark to be carried on a cart rather than by the Levites as God had decreed. Though David did it with good intent and sounds of worship, the manner of bringing back the ark was improper. We are shown here how important it is to submit our plans, however right they may seem to us, to the counsel of scripture and of God-ordained leadership, seeking the Lord for his design, guidance and consent. Our worship and praise are pleasing to God when we come humbly, reverently and joyously before Him in actions for which we have assurance of his approval, not in the flesh, for self-gain, or for show.
