Nehemiah 11

Daily Devotional from Nehemiah 11--

Verse 2
“The people blessed all the men who willingly offered to live in Jerusalem.”

Living in Jerusalem at this time was not an attractive ordeal. It was risky business. Sandballat–and his terrorist network–were still making threats. The wall, though rebuilt by this point, was certainly not foolproof. The city lacked resources, stability, and infrastructure. To move to the city meant leaving behind good, spacious land and the opportunities that came with it.

But the city needed population, and the temple needed support. So some were chosen by lot, and others volunteered willingly.

Sometimes your community will ask you to do difficult things. Are you willing to do what’s necessary? Sometimes it’s going to be inconvenient. But that’s just the nature of making sacrifices for the whole.

In Nehemiah’s day, you could either be drafted or volunteer willingly. That choice remains today. And Scripture reminds us that there is a unique blessing attached to those who step forward willingly.
