Numbers 5
Daily Devotional from Numbers 5—
Verse 29
This is the law in cases of jealousy, when a wife, though under her husband's authority, goes astray and defiles herself, or when the spirit of jealousy comes over a man and he is jealous of his wife.
This chapter sets forth a specific way of determining guilt or innocence in a wife accused of adultery in ancient Israel. It shows both the severity of the act and the wrongfulness of the husband taking action on his own suspicions. The matter was brought before the Lord. In surrounding cultures, the husband could murder his wife whether she was found in the act or he merely suspected such of his (possibly innocent) wife. Under Hebrew law, God miraculously made the determination via the outcome of this ceremony.
We deserve to suffer for our own sin, to drink the bitter cup, to die in payment. Jesus chose to drink that cup in obedience to the Father (Matt 26:39) in our place. He took our punishment, made atonement with His blood and paid the penalty of death so we could live! What a marvelous Savior He is!
Give Him adoration, thanksgiving and praise for His sacrifice and for His wondrous love!
