Judges 7-8
Daily Devotional from Judges 8—
Verses 33-34
As soon as Gideon died, the people of Israel turned again and whored after the Baals and made Baal-berith their god. And the people of Israel did not remember the Lord their God, who had delivered them from the hand of all their enemies on every side, and they did not show steadfast love to the family of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) in return for all the good that he had done to Israel.
Oh Gideon. Such a sad example of a lukewarm life. God chose him to deliver Israel. But he had a very hard time believing God. He finally obeyed after a couple of fleece incidents, and God used him to defeat the enemy. I love how Gideon declined the offer to rule over Israel, stating that the Lord was their ruler…but then he turned around and crafted a golden shirt to worship?! What was he thinking?
Israel had rest under Gideon, but the instant he died, they were running to their fake gods again, and didn’t even remember the good that had been in Gideon’s life.
God wants us either HOT or COLD. We are either ALL IN or we are not. A life fully surrendered to glorifying God first and foremost will touch chords that ripple throughout eternity. That’s the kind of life I want to live – how about you?
